Only what is “of its time in our house”

Because the terrace at Gostilna za Gradom has such far reaching views of Koper and the Adriatic Sea, it has witnessed so many ‘sea stories’ that its head chef and owner, Darko Rodica, is a real Slovenian sea legend! Nowhere else in Slovenia can you find so many sea creatures of such fresh origin.

And that is because this old Koper rocker, who has only ever missed one ‘big’ concert – and that was for a good reason – as on 5 July 1975, when Pink Floyd played in Knebworth park – he opened this restaurant behind Gravisi Castle in the Semedela area of Koper, which is nowadays visited by the largest number of fishermen in the Bay of Piran in Slovenia and on Croatia’s islands. “There is only one secret ‘spice’ needed, that which comes straight from the heart – a whole lot of love”, according to the narrator of Slovenia’s ‘sea stories’, while for those who listen attentively, he goes on: “I will tell you what I’m going to do today…”

At Gostilna za Gradom you will only find “what is of its time in our house”, and that includes the sea urchins cooked by Darko’s wife and co-owner Sonja, to Darko’s ‘sea stories’, boating friends and neighbours from vineyards, olive groves and orchards, and from walks with dogs along the coast and visits to the market with a basket, to the scents of herbs and vitamins from the vegetable garden.
