We love it
I love a warm bread oven, old oak parquet, worn larch benches and lace in frames. I love it because on the front door it simply says: ‘Gostilna’, and on the other side one raises a simple toast to regulars. Žabar is an old restaurant on the edge of the city, in which one wall features the Slovenian anthem, and on the other there are drawings of famous guests. I love such authentic, sincere, homely and traditional Slovenian restaurants, as is Žabar in Vič, which is why it is always full!
Because everything on the outside is new, everything on the inside at Žabar is old. The same emphasis and the same wording. This is not culinary science, this is restaurant tradition, like starting with chicken pate, followed by frogs’ legs, and then something meaty, juicy, crispy and good from the bread oven, before one must again decide between the chocolate cake, which has been on the menu for around 40 years, and the cream slice, which is always fresh daily.

Recommendation
For regular guests who every week have a serious conversation about the old days over a litre of the new vintage wine, there is veal stew or beef goulash. For lunch, because the former has already run out by then, which also says a lot, there is roast veal. For tradition, there are frogs’ legs, so freshly fried that one’s mouth quickly becomes hooked. And that’s not all! For thirst, there is a bar in the old homestead, which is decorated ethnographically, but in a homely way, and there is also accommodation above it. For the young, ice-creams are the house specialty at the old Gostilna pri Žabarju. And for you? Since Žabar is a Ljubljana institution, there is a large enough car park next to the old Vič fire station.

Ambience
There is a large table for regular guests by the bar, which is heated all year round by the clay farmhouse stove. Behind it, the small room is always full, so on the other side there is a fine dining room on two levels. Since Žabar is still an old restaurant on the edge of the city, the courtyard has a large garden under lush chestnut trees.
