Restaurant Spargus is a reward for: diners who go up the staircase; day trippers who aren’t merely interested in history; visitors to the former monastery who stay for a non-monastery dinner; those celebrating in the knowledge they’ve chosen the right place; the curious who have just turned off the motorway; gourmets who can also visit Gastuž and the Žiče monastery; and those dining at Spargus who can savour chef’s specials in the castle hall.
No one actually happens to be passing this place, because all those here for a multi-course feast are here on the invitation of the chef. However, in a place where there’s so much history and where the white tablecloths in Slovenia’s oldest restaurant reach to the floor, it’s exactly as it should be. Gastuž deserves to be something special in the same way its guests deserve more than to just come here on a historical excursion.
