The characteristics of a good gostilna

Good inn (gostilna) can be recognised from the outside! Particularly those in Gorenjska. Does it have a wooden balcony above the entrance? Is there anything lush and red hanging from it? Does the door have a wide arch and is it made from solid wood? Is the family name inscribed on the beautiful façade? Are the windows adorned with grandmother’s lace and the shelves full of mother’s jam? Is the old, large, solid building in the centre of the village and opposite the church? And, above all, what is written for the day on the blackboard at the entrance?

Gostilna Starman is one of those restaurants in which you know what you want before you even go in. First, venison paté with horseradish cream, followed by chicken soup with julienne vegetables, and for the main course suckling pig terrine with curd cheese štruklji. But since there are so many special homemade cakes available, you don’t (yet) know what you will have for dessert! But then what does it matter when you can forget all your troubles when you visit Gostilna Starman.

Gostilna Starman is a genuine, traditional Slovenian restaurant, which is recognisable from the outside for its character and from the inside for its ambience. Starman gives Stara Loka its centre and its guests a refuge!

Recommendation

Quote

One goes to a traditional restaurant for calves’ liver, but Gostilna Starman has also a seasonal menu. How about venison ragu with homemade tagliatelle or fillet of mouflon with a pumpkin souffle? And if you can’t decide, opt for the tasting menu. The calves’ liver can wait until next time, as you will be certain to visit again!

Ambience

The tables around the wood-fired oven are laid for everything – snacks, lunches, drinking to one’s health and tastings, while the Starman hall is where all the village’s history takes place – from christenings to funeral wakes.
