Don’t underestimate Debeluh
Hospitable Jure Tomič is the conductor of this homely restaurant in the centre of Brežice with its elegant metropolis-like glass veranda, while his mother takes care of service and his brother helps out in the kitchen. So, never underestimate Ošterija Debeluh, which began as a grill-style restaurant, but now features fine dining galore, with pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, but in a refined, polished and superior way, with excellent wines to match.
2017: Chef’s rosti grill
Jure Tomič uses contrasts to attract. It begins with champagne, alongside which is kajmak (a savoury dairy product, similar to clotted cream). There are pigs’ trotters in the soup, and the menu isn’t complete without foie gras and the signature ‘cake’ of grated steak tartare with a souffle of quails’ egg yolks. It doesn’t end just with blueberry strudel but also with chocolates that are the most delicious of all of Slovenia’s top restaurants.
The kitchen at Ošterija Debeluh may feature a charcoal rosti grill but it is famous for the creativeness of its head chef. Debeluh’s dishes are simple though artistic in appearance. The emphasis is on the ingredients and retaining their flavours. Jure Tomič knows where his home is, is aware of his ancestors and the local climate, and appreciates his guests by offering them only the best.
Though you may plan to come for some grilled meat, you will delighted to find that the menu features more courses than there are rungs on the griddle of Ošterija Debeluh’s charcoal-fired barbecue, and more wines than you will be able to remember in the morning!
