Don’t underestimate Debeluh

Ošterija Debeluh isn’t just a provocative name, as it doesn’t merely provoke one’s appetite but rather one’s curiosity. The head chef is a former winner of the title World Pasta Champion, and Debeluh is also regarded as the best restaurant in Zagreb, albeit in the middle of Brezice, Slovenia. It’s known for its legendary steak tartare cake, foie gras and quails’ eggs, as well as traditional blueberry strudel. This is an old restaurant with an Italian name and a French style, with the charm of a noble homeliness, but with the new elegance of black and pink walls and the waiters’ white gloves! And, of course, also a grill, albeit only for the authenticity of the smell, respecting its roots and encouraging the head chef’s creativity!

So, never underestimate Ošterija Debeluh, which began as a grill-style restaurant, but now features fine dining galore, with pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, but in a refined, polished and superior way, with excellent wines to match.

Debeluh’s dishes are simple though artistic in appearance. The emphasis is on the ingredients and retaining their flavours. Jure Tomič knows where his home is, is aware of his ancestors and the local climate, and appreciates his guests by offering them only the best.

Although Posavje isn’t (yet) the new Champagne, Debeluh (English: fat guy) already has the answer to the question of why French women are so slim and why the French drink such good wine. All recipes have been cooked somewhere and sometime, hence the essence of being a chef is ‘only’ in how the recipes are adapted at a given moment, the environment, season, weather and disposition. Jure Tomič is such a master at this that it’s not just the motorway that makes everything close at Ošterija Debeluh.
