Eight generations of hospitality

This is an open-door farm, hence it’s homely and sociable. This is a hill-top farm, hence the cattle aren’t kept shut in a barn and the fields aren’t ploughed with a combine harvester. This is a hospitable farmstead, where eight generations of the Kristan family have been living alongside their guests.

There are good reasons why the friendly guard dog sleeps peacefully in front of the door, even though people indoors, gathered around the wood-burning stove, are loudly licking their lips. It’s thanks to the organic beef, game from the surrounding area and the best produce from neighbours and elsewhere that the slices of carpaccio with Bovec sheep melt so succulently in Istrian olive oil, the pheasant pate goes so well with homemade apricot jam, the beef soup not only smells of Sunday roast but of meat štruklji, and there’s venison with pear in red wine. And that’s not all! The succulent stuffing of the home-reared chicken smells of tarragon, and the curd cheese štruklji are a perfect accompaniment to the beef in a crispy coating, and some of those who come also order sweet štruklji with pears, while others order buckwheat štruklji with walnuts.

Be sure to book in advance, otherwise you will be disappointed! If you arrive on time, a beautifully laid table awaits. If you are late, you’ll need to choose quickly. If you take your time ordering, they will quickly explain what would suit you best. And if you’d like more, they’ll bring it. If you can’t eat everything, they’ll wrap it up so you can take it home. If it’s your first visit, they’ll remember you next time. Even if it’s raining outside, everyone inside is in good spirits – the local and their guests.
