Good food alongside a wine cellar

These beautiful slopes of Goričko are not only home to Marof’s wines, but there is also an old homestead next to an excellent wine cellar and a manor house. Here, under its ornate arches and in its theatre of vines, you can enjoy lunch, which the Marof homestead serves at weekends as if in a manor house and with wines as if in a cellar!

For those who only come for the good wines or the beautiful landscape, there are local delicacies from the surrounding farms with the flavours of Goričko on the table. If the trip, the tasting, the ambiance, the nice weather and the aromas from the kitchen make you want more, the chicken is always freshly fried. Following a visit to one of the most modern wine cellars in Slovenia, where the nectar of the most beautiful grapes ripens in barrels made of the best oak – which the owner of Marof wines left in the smallest quantity and on the vine as long as possible – the thirsty want more than just bread and cheese.

That’s why there are always local dishes, which change seasonally, at Marof. Venison roulade is filled with bacon and vegetables, and pear stewed in red wine is served with cranberry jam. There are also fried pheasant breasts in pumpkin breadcrumbs, which can also be corn. Or how about the pork fillet stuffed with porcini mushrooms. Would you like that?

It’s only lunch and only at weekends, but isn’t that – lunch at the weekend – exactly what causes us the most headaches? In many places it’s simple, but rarely is it also good. On a trip through Prekmurje, in the beautiful Goričko region, next to an excellent wine cellar, in the middle of a natural grape theatre with a lake as a stage, lunch at Marof is just as simple as in so many other country restaurants that we like to visit at weekends, but – better!

Wine list

The house wine itself is floral and spicy with an aroma of fragrant lilies, while the wines from the Goričko label allow themselves more creative freedom. However, for the main course, there are wines from three great locations – Bodonci, Kramarovci and Mačkovci – which are not transitory and are not of a fleeting fashion. They are, simply, Grand vin.

Ambience

Under the arches of the old homestead, you can see that there is a manor house next door. Here, among the tall roses and long tables, among the warm colours and cool top wines, one can feel the history and character of this place.
